Judges Comments
Dr Philip Bacon AM - Philip Bacon Galleries, Brisbane
For this, the 17th Arts Festival, there were any number of interesting and worthwhile works of art amongst the 400 or so entries.
Again, the sculpture section was the least supported, and also the weakest in quality of entries. That said, the acquisitions made will, I’m sure, be valuable additions to the collection.
I particularly liked the witty bronze by Di West ‘Man in the blue shirt’-: such a clever concept and while Phil Willy’s ‘Shipshape’ would never float, it is nevertheless an imaginative use of found objects. The woven pandanus sculpture ‘Ocean Artifact’ by Adrienne Kneebone is beautifully crafted, as is Tatania Gvozdetskia’s ‘Small flat round’.
The pottery section, while small, contained some exceptional pieces, and if there was a category ‘Best of Show’ (which of course, there isn’t) I would have awarded it to the exquisite group of eggshell-fine porcelain bowls by Mel Robson ‘A secret history: Vol 3’.
Also exceptional were Sophie Thomas’ ‘Spiral Form’ which was like molten opal and Julie Shepherd’s pleasing group of perforated porcelain shapes ‘oz podz’.
The under $500 section punched above its weight, and there were many works that could have won, but Beverly Eggins ‘24 Walks through the forest’ was a brilliant use of print and other techniques. The regional award category was also strong, and as David Le May’s ‘Looking for Aquila’ was acquired for the collection and was therefore not eligible, I was pleased to be able to award the $1,000 prize to Graeme Schreiber’s very evocative ‘Emus’.
The main section had many impressive entries from the technically proficient collograph ‘Continuum’ by Suzanne Danaker, the quirky James Guppy ‘A Moment’, the contemplative watercolour ‘Distant Rain’ by Bruce Buchanan, to Kylie Elkington’s ‘Sign of Landscape # 1’, with its subtle and effective use of glazes. I’m pleased that the first photograph to enter the collection is such a striking image as ‘Blue Cray / Red Claw’ by Walter Stahl, and another fine work on paper Ron McBurnies ‘The Lines are Drawn’ is also a valuable addition. |
