McDonalds Applethorpe The Granite Belt PROFILE
Heaton Pittendreigh
of Glen Niven Pottery workshop and gallery [see this page for ad] is new to the Granite Belt. A self taught potter who began making pots in the early ‘70’s, Heaton spent the first few years observing other potters’ work and
questioning why their pots had qualities he wanted to achieve. He feels that self critique and motivation, coupled with the desire to produce good quality pots have been the driving forces that have held his interest in clay for over 30 years.

From the early years until recently all his work was wood fired in large kilns which he built. But since moving to Stanthorpe in 2004 from Central Queensland he feels the physical demand of large wood firings too much for his advancing years and now fires his work in a very large gas kiln.

Heaton believes that he fits into the role of the traditional potter – that is he makes pots for people to use - with his inspiration coming from the medium itself.
